For some time I have been fascinated by the way photographs of people are disguised by enlarging the pixels of the face

Yet you can often make out who it might be.
So I decided to see if I could paint portraits made up of
enlarged pixels, with the idea of them appearing to be quite
chaotic at first sight but represent a subtle yet real likeness
My first attempt was stimulated by the arrival of my 3rd grand daughterin October 2016.

I wanted to give the proud parents a very personal reminder of the happy
event, ideally in time for that Christmas.
I started with the very first picture taken of baby Lara, just hours after she
was born.
'
With a little invaluable help from my surrealist friend and 'iMac'and Photoshop 'master, Richard Saunders we managed to pixilate the image to just 30 pixels wide and 20 pixels deep.
This was followed by the task of painting it on a 30" x 20"board, so 600 separate, 1" square
I was quite pleased with the end result and more importantly so were her proud parents.

With this result in mind I determined to investigate the idea further with other portraits of friends and family. These include some that are quite recognisable and others that are more abstracted, which was my original intention.

The idea of them is to appear to be quite chaotic at first sight
but represent a subtle yet real likeness.
